Blas Burgerworks, St Ives

Tucked away in a narrow side street behind the lifeboat station at St Ives is Blas Burgerworks. All eco-rustic and local-organic Blas offers a couple of vegetarian burgers that are above average. There is a blackbean burger, served in two ways, and a “Sunflower Burger” which is a spicy tofu burger.

I had the tofu burger and it was presented in a large bap with salad and stuff on top. The flat, thin, home-made tofu burger was soft and slightly spicy, flavoured with chilli, ginger and coriander. The ‘stuff on top’ included lettuce, alfalfa, peppers and tahini. I also had a Skinners with it, a Cornish larger. Blas are all about using Cornish produce, being eco-friendly and recycling. Both the burger and the Skinners were tasty, filled me up and left me feeling very refreshed.

The air in Blas was a bit smokey from the meat burgers being cooked in the open kitchen so it might not suit all vegetarians or vegans but the vegetarian food is cooked and prepared separately so there shouldn’t be too much cross contamination.

I had the meal midweek in the evening and only just got a table there even though it was still early in the season. I think they are open during the day – but either way it’s probably best to check with them if you want a table as the place is quite small and they are also very popular.
